EXP-01 | Outdoor Expo/Experience Rotterdam-Zuid

27/04/2025

About the Project

EXP-01 is an innovative outdoor exhibition project designed specifically to bring new media art directly into the heart of Rotterdam-Zuid. Unlike typical gallery or exclusive event spaces, this project places captivating LED installations and projection mappings in accessible public spaces within local neighborhoods. The aim is to democratize contemporary visual art and engage communities traditionally underrepresented in the art world, especially local youth.

Vision and Objectives

The core vision of EXP-01 is to inspire and ignite creativity within the community, particularly among young residents who typically have limited exposure to contemporary artistic practices and new media art. By strategically placing these installations in everyday spaces, the project makes cutting-edge artistic experiences available to all, fostering curiosity, imagination, and cultural enrichment without pre-structured interactions or guided interpretations. The installations are designed to be self-explanatory, allowing community members to experience and respond organically.

This exhibition intends to bridge the gap between traditional new media art settings, usually confined to city centers or closed events, and neighborhoods where such art rarely reaches. By aligning closely with the digital culture familiar to younger generations through social media and popular artists, EXP-01 aims to stimulate motivation, passion, and hidden talents within Rotterdam-Zuid's vibrant communities.

Current Status

While the original project plan has been thoroughly developed and is ready for deployment, the initial funding application to Stimuleringsfonds Digitale Cultuur was unfortunately declined. Currently, the We Don't Care Foundation team is actively engaging in productive conversations with Cultuur Concreet Feijenoord and Cultuur Concreet Charlois to explore alternative funding pathways and adapt the project's concept slightly to better fit local community frameworks.

The exhibition is planned to run across approximately three public locations in Rotterdam-Zuid over several weekends, including evening hours to maximize community interaction and accessibility. Final implementation details remain flexible, contingent upon securing sufficient funding.

What Do We Still Need?

  • Co-Funding Confirmation: We continue discussions with Cultuur Concreet and are actively seeking alternative funding partners to support the project's realization.

  • Community Engagement Strategy: We are refining our approach to ensure maximum community involvement and a meaningful connection with local residents.
