EXP-02 | Senegal Documentary Screening/Experience
About the Project:
EXP-02 is an innovative exhibition that transforms the powerful documentary L'Étoile de la Rue into an immersive digital art experience, showcasing the journey of photographer and filmmaker Sethi. Initially traveling to Senegal to capture his father's homeland through photography, Sethi's project took an unexpected turn when he organically encountered Saliou, an inspiring young basketball player in Dakar. Their shared passion for basketball and creativity sparked the creation of this unique documentary.
Rather than focusing solely on the protagonist's experiences, EXP-02 highlights the deeper journey of Sethi as an artist. The exhibition brings visitors into the heart of Sethi's transformative experience. Capturing the spontaneous connections, profound interactions, and organic creativity that unfolded throughout his journey.
A Unique Artistic Approach:
Unlike traditional screenings, the exhibition will not present the documentary in its entirety. Instead, EXP-02 will use selective scenes, artistic edits, and abstract digital interpretations of key documentary moments. Through innovative use of digital art, projection mapping, LED installations, and interactive elements, visitors will explore the emotional and creative journey behind the making of the film. This creative approach transforms the documentary into a deeply personal, reflective experience.
Supporting Young Talent and Community Impact:
EXP-02 also has a crucial community-driven mission. Throughout the exhibition, funds will be raised to support the renovation of a legendary basketball court in Dakar, the very location where Sethi and Saliou's paths first crossed. This court has been instrumental in the careers of many renowned Senegalese basketball players. In partnership with the Flying Star Academy in Dakar, the renovation project will support emerging young talents, helping them pursue their basketball dreams and continue inspiring others through sport.
Due to this meaningful social aspect, the exhibition is intended to be repeated regularly throughout the year and presented at multiple locations, increasing both community impact and visibility.

Current Status:
We recently spoke with Najel from Cultuur Concreet, who is helping connect us with the appropriate contact at Het Katoenhuis, one of our preferred venue partners for this exhibition. Meanwhile, we are still refining the technical and artistic components of the expo in collaboration with our creative team. Although our funding application for preliminary research was not accepted by Stimuleringsfonds, we remain committed to the project and will carry out our own independent research phase, which will take more time but also allow us greater creative control.
We've also submitted our concept plan to FENIX, a major upcoming museum in Rotterdam, to explore potential collaboration. Our long-term vision is to shape this project into a traveling, modular exhibition that can be installed at various cultural venues across the country and beyond.
What Do We Still Need?
-
Finalization of the artistic and technical concept: Defining the narrative structure and installation setup for each space within the exhibition.
-
Completion of the full project plan and updated budget, based on insights gathered through self-initiated research and technical tests.
-
Ongoing conversations with Het Katoenhuis, Cultuur Concreet, and FENIX to establish venue partnerships and build a foundation for sustainable presentation and funding.
